The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre's  Herb Garden playscentral role in
Herbal farming
the education of our students. Botanical medicine students study and cultivate a variety of 
medicinal plants throughout their life cycle. Many of these plants are harvested at their seasonal peak for creating medicinal tinctures and salves. Nutrition classes use the cultivated culinary herbs and organic vegetables in the instition's whole-food kitchen lab. The garden is designed, cultivated and managed by students and volunteers under the guidance of the garden manager and assistant garden manager with a combined total over 21 years of experience.

Hazelnuts fruit

The Hazelnuts belong to the family Corylaceae.The species are found growing in wild forms in temperate zones extending from Japan,China,Turkey and Europe to North America.The nuts are small-sized and have a hard shell.Turkey is  the world's leading producer of filberts/hazelnuts and other growers are Italy, Spain and the USA. In India the hazelnut exists in the Western Himalayas, particularly Kashmir,in its wild form.In Kashmir,hazelnut diversity is available in Dachigam National Park and other higher elevations of the state in the wild farm.trees are cultivated for nuts, timber and for ornamental purpose.Some of the improved cultivars introduced from Italy are Tonda, Gentile Della Langhe, Tonda Romana and Tonda Giffoni and some superior indigenous selections.
In the Kashmir vale, kiwi fruit orchards have been established at Srinagar and Anantnag and some areas of Budgam.

sea buckthorn plant Kashmir

Hippophae rhamnoides, also known as common sea buckthorn is a species of flowering plant in the
Sea buckthorn plant
family Elaeagnaceae, native to the cold-temperate regions of Europe and Asia.


In Kashmir is found  at AnantnagPhalgham, Warwan,Dawar, Ladakh,Kargil, Sonmarag and Leh.DRDO  Field R&D Lab has developed Leh berry tea,fruits made into antioxidant rich Leh berry juice.

It is a spiny deciduous shrub. The plant is used in the food and cosmetics industries, in traditional medicine, as animal fodder, and for ecological purposes. In India mostly it is found in high altitude cold arid condition of Ladakh (Kargil and Leh, Baramulla,Anantnag, Kishtwar)
Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. All parts of the plants viz berries, leaves, stem, seeds or pulp oil contains many bio-active compounds.

Typha angustifolia L.(Small Reed Mace) is a perennial herbaceous plant of genus Typha. This cattail is an "obligate wetland" species that is commonly found in the northern hemisphere in brackish locations.

The pollen is diuretic, emmenagogue and haemostatic. The dried pollen is said to be anticoagulant, but when roasted with charcoal it becomes haemostatic. It is used internally in the treatment of kidney stones, internal haemorrhage of almost any kind, painful menstruation, abnormal uterine bleeding, post-partum pains, abscesses and cancer of the lymphatic system. It should not be prescribed for pregnant women. Externally, it is used in the treatment of tapeworms, diarrhoea and injuries. An infusion of the root has been used in the treatment of gravel.
